Best Hiking Trails Near Newport and Waldport
With each passing day, the sun is lingering a little longer in the sky, rising a little earlier and setting even later. A sunset around 8pm is always my first sign that it’s time to get back outside and start exploring again.
There’s something special about this time of year on the Oregon Coast. The days feel a little lighter, the air fresher, and the trails start calling.
What better way to experience the Central Oregon Coast than by finding a favorite hiking trail?
Over time, I’ve discovered a few favorite spots near Waldport, Seal Rock, and Newport that I keep coming back to. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful forest walk or a trail with ocean views, there’s something here for everyone.
And when you find the trail that’s calling your name, having the perfect place to come back to makes all the difference. Our vacation homes in Waldport and Newport are located just minutes from many of these trails, making it easy to explore during the day and relax by the coast in the evening.
Here are a few of my favorite hiking trails to get you started.
Drift Creek Falls Trail
Drift Creek Falls Trail is one of the most unique hikes in the area. The trail leads through a lush forest to a stunning suspension bridge overlooking a waterfall.
It’s a bit more of a drive from Waldport, but absolutely worth it if you’re looking for something memorable.
This was a great trail to explore with my two young children, and one we’d happily return to.
Yaquina Head Trails
If you’re looking for an easy coastal walk with incredible views, the trails around Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area are a great option. This area offers paved and well maintained paths that lead to stunning ocean overlooks, tide pools, and the iconic lighthouse.
It’s a perfect stop if you want something scenic without a long or difficult hike.
This is a great family friendly option, especially with younger kids.
Mike Miller Park
Tucked away in South Beach, Mike Miller Park is one of those quiet spots that feels like a hidden gem. The trails wind through a lush coastal forest, offering a peaceful escape from the busier areas nearby.
It’s a great place for an easy walk, especially if you’re looking for something relaxing and not too crowded.
This was the first trail that I walked with my 2 year old daughter.
Ona Beach State Park Trails
Ona Beach State Park is one of my favorite quieter spots near Waldport. The trails here take you through coastal forest and along Beaver Creek before opening up to a beautiful, wide beach.
It’s a great mix of forest and ocean, and a perfect place for a slower, more peaceful walk.
Beaver Creek State Natural Area
If you’re looking for a quieter, more peaceful hike, Beaver Creek is a beautiful place to explore. The trails follow the creek through wetlands and forest, making it a great spot for wildlife viewing.
It’s especially nice in the spring when everything feels fresh, green, and full of life.
This is another family friendly spot that doesn’t tend to get crowded. Our family loved listening to the sounds of the birds here.
Cape Perpetua Scenic Area
Cape Perpetua is one of the most iconic areas on the Oregon Coast, and for good reason. The network of trails here offers everything from short scenic walks to longer hikes with incredible ocean views.
Some highlights include:
- panoramic viewpoints overlooking the coastline
- forest trails through old growth trees
- access to coastal features like tide pools and rocky shorelines
This is a must visit if you’re staying in the area.
Amanda’s Trail
Located near Yachats, Amanda’s Trail is a beautiful hike that connects forest and ocean views. The trail climbs through a quiet wooded area before opening up to sweeping views of the coastline.
It’s a great option if you’re looking for something a little more adventurous with a rewarding view at the top.
No matter which trail you choose, each one offers a different way to experience the beauty of the Oregon Coast.
Staying Near Waldport and Newport Trails
One of the best ways to enjoy these hiking trails is by staying nearby, so you can take your time exploring the area without feeling rushed.
Many of our vacation homes are located within a short drive of these trailheads, making it easy to plan a day of hiking, followed by a relaxing evening by the coast.
